YIMBY spotted signs of construction activity subtly taking shape at The Breuer Building, the iconic Brutalist-style museum structure at 945 Madison Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The property, originally built in 1966 and designed by Marcel Breuer, was given landmark status at the end of May, a move that comes before Sotheby’s plans to move into the structure in the near future. The site is located at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 75th Street.

Demolition Wrapping Up At 1655 First Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side

Demolition is almost fully complete at 1655 First Avenue, the site of a pair of 23-story residential buildings on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Designed by S. Wieder Architect for Cheskel Schwimmer of Chess Builders LLC, the 235-foot-tall structure will span 145,086 square feet and yield 198 rental units with an average scope of 725 square feet. The project will also include ground-floor commercial space, a cellar level, and a 30-foot-long rear yard. The 12,000-square-foot property is alternately addressed as 355 East 86th Street and located at the corner of First Avenue and East 86th Street.

Superstructure Rising at 500 East 81st Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side

Construction goes vertical at 501 East 81st Street, an upcoming ten-story residential building in the Yorkville section of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Designed by Zproekt Architecture and developed by Rybak Development, the 100-foot-tall structure is planned to span 29,829 square feet with an undisclosed number of units, likely condominiums based on the design firm’s history in the neighborhood. The building will also have a cellar level and three enclosed parking spaces. The property is located at the southeast corner of York Avenue and East 81st Street.

1522 First Avenue Wraps Up Construction on Manhattan’s Upper East Side

Construction is coming to a close at 1522 First Avenue, a 30-story medical office building in the Yorkville section of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Designed by Perkins Eastman and developed by Extell, the 449-foot-tall structure will yield 400,000 square feet of Class A office space, as well as retail space on the ground floor and cellar levels. The Hospital for Special Surgery will serve as the anchor tenant, occupying 200,000 square feet across the first eight stories of the building. The property is alternately addressed as 403 East 79th Street and is located between East 79th and East 80th Streets.
